ACE - Redefining the way ideas move to market in Waterloo

Founded in 2008, the Accelerator for Commercialization Excellence (ACE), is a unique partnership between Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE), the University of Waterloo (UW), and Waterloo's Accelerator Centre.  ACE breaks down marketplace barriers for entrepreneurs and start ups, giving them one source and one point of contact for expertise, services and support spanning the commercialization process.

ACE works with you to develop a plan best suited for commercialization of Intellectual Property (IP) - drawing resources, expertise and programs from the ACE partners. This centralized access leverages and maximizes the respective strengths of the partners, dramatically accelerating the commercialization process for entrepreneurs, allowing technologies to smoothly move to market.

ACE Representatives

Tim Ellis, Chief Operating Officer, Accelerator Centre

As Chief Operating Officer for the Accelerator Centre, Tim Ellis provides daily guidance to Centre clients on a range of business and operational issues, and oversees the Centre's education, business development and mentoring programs, as well as the AC's financial and facility operations.

Scott Inwood, Director of Commercialization, Waterloo Commercialization Office (WatCo)

Since 1997, Scott has assumed progressive roles with the University of Waterloo's technology transfer office involving the commercial assessment of new technology opportunities and management of intellectual property protection and commercial negotiations resulting in technology licensing deals and spin-off company creation. In 2007, Scott assumed the role of Director of Commercialization of the Waterloo Commercialization Office (WatCo). Since that time, he has been responsible for significantly growing the University of Waterloo's technology transfer capacity and building operational linkages with the Accelerator Centre, located in the University's Research and Technology Park, the C4 Network south western Ontario technology transfer collaboration initiative, and the CECR-OCE funded Accelerator for Commercialization Excellence (ACE) . Scott holds a BSc. Degree in Chemistry from McMaster University, and an MBA from Wayne State University in Detroit.

Marc Castel, Director of Commercialization, OCE Centre for Commercialization of Research (CCR)

Marc is an engineering graduate from the University of Toronto, with a long career as an entrepreneur, executive business manager, technology analyst, scientist, lecturer and visionary with a track record of results in emerging technologies. His 25 years of business experience includes 6 successful on-going start-ups, senior executive, ownership and science positions in diverse SMEs including digital media, industrial manufacturing, medical devices and services, robotics, education and e-commerce. He has successfully built strong international business networks for US public multi-nationals and Canadian SMEs in his various business roles as Director of International Sales, Managing Director and C.E.O. His experience includes reverse take-overs, mergers and acquisitions and attraction of capital. He has solid General Management experience in small and mid-sized ISO registered businesses with a strong grasp of scientific technical, financial, management and marketing aspects of complex businesses. Castel has also worked as a Business Development Manager for the Ontario Centres of Excellence and the Canadian Institute for Photonic Innovations. In his current role as Director of Commercialization for OCE, he is helping to turn ideas into new products and successful businesses.
 

Gary Brock, Director of Strategic Initiatives, University of Waterloo Commercialization Office (WatCo)

Gary is Director of Strategic Initiatives within the University of Waterloo's Commercialization Office (WatCo) where his engineering and business leadership is a resource to both faculty and industry in bringing new technologies to market and securing competitive advantage through innovation. First hand experience in start-up company creation and financing, business strategy development, technology licensing, project management, product development, patent strategy, project management and engineering sales are used to help realize the commercial potential of the University's extensive research portfolio.

Prior to joining the University, Gary was a Senior Business Development Manager with the Ontario Centres of Excellence responsible for the technology transfer and commercialization activities within the Centre for Materials and Manufacturing and subsequently the Centre for Communications and Information Technology. He is a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario and has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo.
